Job Description

The Corpus Christi Museum of Science & History seeks friendly, reliable and mature individuals with experience as receptionists and as a cashier. Successful candidates will be highly professional, personable and have the ability to sell memberships and other opportunities at the museum. 

Major Duties

  • Answers incoming telephone calls, determines purpose of callers, and forwards calls to appropriate personnel or department.
  • Answers questions about organization and provides callers with address, directions, and other information.
  • Monitors visitor access and runs admission transactions.
  • Takes payments for services, gift shop products and various museum programs.
  • Makes change and issues receipts or tickets to customers.
  • Reads and records totals shown on cash register tape and verifies against cash on hand.
  • Operates cash register by passing price coded items across electronic scanner to record price, compile printed list, and display cost of customer purchase, tax, and rebates on monitor screen.
  • Performs other clerical duties as needed
  • Other duties may be assigned.

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience in retail cashier is preferred.

Language Skills                                                             

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills                                                     

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability                                                         

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
