Space Week at the Museum

Event Details:

Join us for a week-long adventure into space! Every day holds new wonders–and every day will have a different theme and activities, leading up to the big Valero Eclipse Extravaganza event on Saturday. Come by! Learn about celestial navigation, aeronautical engineering, or the future of space travel through hands-on STEM activities for all ages. Science shows daily at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. with water rocket demonstrations at 2:00 p.m. Scroll down for more . . . 

Monday, October 9: Celestial Navigation. Learn how the constellations help explorers navigate on Earth and in Space by making edible constellations and sundials.

Tuesday, October 10: NASA and the Moon. Discover how the NASA scientists got us to the moon! Design and create your own lunar lander.

At 7:00 p.m., enjoy our October Distinguished Lecture at the Front Porch Stage. Noted space historian and local author Rob Bailey will discuss his research and publications, The Ever Changing Moon (Volumes 1 & 2), about Apollo 16 and Corpus Christi’s history with NASA.

Wednesday, October 11: Our Solar System and What’s Out There. Learn more about the planets of our solar system, as well as other phenomena like black holes, nebulas and more with live planetarium show from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Create a paper plate solar system and a galaxy in a jar. Join the Museum’s science educators for Solar System Scale demonstrations at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.

Thursday, October 12: Mars and the Future of Space Exploration. Learn all about the red planet and the robots exploring the region. Design your own functioning planetary rover with pasta. At 1:00 p.m., enjoy a special presentation by a representative of a commercial space venture.

Friday, October 13: STEM Fun Friday. All the best activities from the week!

Saturday, October 14: Valero Eclipse Extravaganza! A high-noon Moon is coming! The Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History and Valero present the Valero Eclipse Extravaganza! It’s a day filled with one-of-a-kind activities and programs to celebrate this one-of-a-kind celestial event.­ (Safety glasses will be provided for the first 1100 guests.) The eclipse will arc directly over the Museum a few minutes before noon. The Corpus Christi Astronomical Society, the Museum’s celestial partner, will focus their telescope on the stellar event. And from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m, the Museum’s science educators (staff and volunteers) will present STEM-focused experiments and demonstrations including solar ovens, solar slime, galaxy jars, and chemistry ice cream.  See water rocket demonstrations at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.
